Original sketch by Danish painter Axel Johansen” Boy on staircase in Italy”. This sketch was for a painting called "Boy on staircase in Italy". To my knowledge the painting was last sold in Denmark in 2010. Size of the painting was 51cm x 44cm. The painting was signed 1905. The size of sketch 54cm x 44cm Axel Johansen was one of the leading Danish painters of his time and exhibited regularly at the Danish equivalent of the Royal Academy. He was born in Roskilde Denmark 23rd January 1872. He served his apprenticeship with the then well-known restoration painters: Mollmand & Co. in Copenhagen. It was here that he was recognized as being a very talented artist and craftsman and here he met Professor August Jerndorff one of Denmark's finest painters of the time. Axel Johansen was asked by Professor Jerndorff to help him with the restoration of the main hall of Copenhagen University. This was to prove very valuable later on in his career. He later studied at the Royal Art Academy in Copenhagen for four years and from that point never looked back. In 1905 he travelled to Italy, 1912 he was in Germany, and in 1921 he went to Italy again and France.
