This is an unissued roll of celulose tape used to protect the muzzle of any weapon and to prevent mud, dirt, snow, sand, etc. from clogging up the barrel. This replaced the small canvas muzzle cover and was alot cheaper for the Government to produce. 1 canvas cover did one rifle. 1 roll fo tape does about 50 rifles. I obtained an unopen crate off 144 of these rolls over 5 years ago. I thought I had sold them all, but I found one burried in a box of stuff. The rolls were packed in individual boxes, 36 rolls each to 4 larger cardboard boxes, 4 large boxes to the crate. When these are gone I have no idea when and if you will ever see them again. Manufactured in November 1944 by the Minnesota, Mining,& Manufacturing Co. ( 3M today ). The roll is OD in color. They are shown in the 1946 QM catalog. They are not in the 1943 edition. The label on the master crate indicated they did not start production of these until Sept. of 44. I no longer have the master crate . You are bidding on ONE ROLL in its individual box. Rare is an overused and abused term on e-bay, but this a truly a rare item. Until I found this crate I had never seen them in almost 35 years of collecting. True they are not as exciting a find as an m3 fighting knife or a Paratrooper helmet, But it is what it is, a unique piece of seldom seen field gear. Remember you are bidding read more
