Up for auction here is an authentic Turner Rifle Bayonet attributed to German immigrants in the 1850’s era around the State of Ohio region of the United States and often used by German Immigrants during the U.S. Civil War. These bayonets are very rare in any condition, especially like this one which appears to have never been polished or sharpened. It is a German Yatagan style blade and has a heavy cast brass handle. It does not come with a scabbard. This particular bayonet surfaced about a month ago from a collection in Central Indiana , not far from where it was probably created 160 years ago! I believe this bayonet was originally a plain rib version of the Turner Bayonet, but was relief inscribed in very nice cursive writing with the phrase “Bahnfrei”, which meant “look out” or “whatch out”. It was more commonly cast into the handles of Turner Rifle Bayonets, also known as “Bahn=Frei” bayonets. This bayonet features a blade which is 19” long and a little over 1.5” wide at the widest point. The handle is exactly 5” long and 3.75” at the widest point. The handle is a one piece solid brass casting. It does appear that some sort of retention spring has broken off of the back at the base where it attaches to the handle. The handle also has a 17 cast into it at the base. Buyer will pay exact shipping with insurance via USPS priority mail from Beech Grove , Indiana . I will not end the auction early for any reason or disclose the reserve price, so please do not ask. I am not a collector but I do believe this to be 100% authentic and will not take returns of this bayonet so please request more photos if needed and please be convinced that it is legit and not a reproduction, as I am, before bidding.
