Original US Army 1881 Indian Wars Scout Dress Helmet

This is a very nice Indian Wars period Indian scout dress helmet with a red and white braided cord and horsehair plume from the 1880's to 1890's. This helmet is the regulation pattern of 1881 and is made of black pressed felt edged with black leather. On the front of the helmet is an eagle with crossed arrows, the insignia of the Indian scouts. The colors red and white were used to represent the union between Indians and white men. I believe this helmet to be original. I thought perhaps the cords were replaced, but then was told that they are an early style and original. The plume support and base are brass, as is the US eagle "staff" plate bearing the distinctive german silver crossed arrows of the Indian Scouts. The side buttons also have crossed arrows (see closeup photo). The helmet is in very good condition with no cracks, dents, or soft spots on the outer shell. The plume and all metal are in excellent condition. T are places on the red and white cordage that are worn or frayed, but nothing distracting to the overall look. I could not find the size marked inside the hat, but I would guess about a 6 7/8. I have started the price very low on this helmet with a NO RESERVE PRICE and will be selling this item AS IS with no returns. Please view all photos. This early Indian Sco ut helmet would make a nice addition to any Cavalry, American Indian, Indian S couts, Indian Police, Military, Old West or Cowboy collection. Good luck bidding.
