This is absolutely the finest, most perfect, totally Regular Army, original US Cavalry enlisted man's plumed helmet you'll ever have the chance to acquire. Most components of this piece are in mint condition, and it is totally original with the exception of the chinstrap, cords, and "open washer." All details of the helmet conform perfectly to Army Regulations of the late 1880s and 1890s. The cords and plume match perfectly, in the 1887 pattern shade of "Cavalry chrome yellow." The black felt helmet body was crafted by Horstmann, and is an early 1890s product (based upon the dimensions and texturing of the sweatband itself), though the sweatband is stuck to its enameled base, and so can't be read for contract dates. Size is a typical "7." All the brass hardware is pristine, and was recently polished and sealed to match in color and gloss. The Cavalry frontplate is absolutely, guaranteed original and boasts a German silver numeral "7" for the famed 7 th Cavalry. This is the pattern of helmet worn by that unit before and after Wounded Knee, and on through the 1890s until the regiment shipped out for Cuba in 1898. The plume socket, as well, is guaranteed original, and is in excellent shape. If the plume looks extraordinarily full and gorgeous, it is because it is actually doubled--two plumes stacked atop one another for the full Cavalier of the Plains effect favored by senior noncoms and other troops afflicted with a bit of martial vanity. As mentioned before, the chinstrap is a reproduction, but it is perfect, and these little straps are invariably missing from most of the helmets you see nowadays. The cords, too, are reproductions, but they're the best worsted wool (most repros are cotton) breastcords and "triplet" suspension manufactured since 1902. In fact, two gentlemen who like to think of themselves as the top experts in the field of Victorian American military headwear recently pronounced a set of these cords to be "original" (I knew these replicas were so good they'd probably "take on a life of their own" sometime in the future--I just didn't think it would be this soon!). Totally honest, completely regulation, and amazingly beautiful--what more could you want in an original Indian Wars dress helmet? Happy bidding!
