Design Story: The Eames lounge chair and ottoman is the culmination of Charles and Ray Eames' efforts to create comfortable and handsome lounge seating by using production techniques that combine technology and handcraftsmanship. Its heritage goes back to the molded plywood chairs pioneered by the Eameses in the 1940s, and it's part of the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art. Charles Eames said his goal for the chair was the "warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman's mitt." Every one is a special refuge from the strains of modern living. The first lounge chair and ottoman, produced in 1956, was a birthday gift for friend Billy Wilder, the Academy Award-winning film director, and it made its public debut on Arlene Francis' Home show, which later became the Today show. Every lounge chair and ottoman manufactured since then has received the same meticulous handcrafted attention. The Eames lounge chair and ottoman is a great place to relax in homes, executive suites, and lounges. With its classic influences, a Goetz sofa coordinates with an Eames lounge chair and ottoman, an Eames elipitcal table, Eames walnut stools, and Nelson tables. The Eames lounge chair is now available in santos palisander veneer. The santos palisander veneer available on the Eames lounge chair and ottoman resembles the original Brazilian rosewood. With its santos palisander veneer, the Eames lounge chair remains grounded in the design details that established it as a furniture icon. The Eames lounge chair and ottoman's santos palisander veneer is harvested only from sustainably managed forests. Santos palisander veneer available on the Eames lounge chair is richly grained and lustrous. The veneer of an Eames lounge chair and ottoman is cut from a single log and laid together in sequence so that grains are matched; the edges and surfaces are hand finished. The Eames lounge chair and ottoman combine the hand-crafted elegance and richness of earlier periods with the grace and simplicity of the best of modern design. The Eames lounge chair is permanently tilted at a 15-degree angle to properly distribute a person's weight to the back of the chair for maximum comfort.© 2006 Herman Miller. But when the original cushions started to show wear, my wife decided to replace them with custom-made crush velvet pillow/cushions. T are 6 cushions, 3 in chocolate & 3 in tan, as you can see in the photos they can be arranged many ways. For those who prefer the orginal leather style, I've kept the hardware that attaches the cushions, and as you see by the photos it still has the original arm cushions. So all you would need is the back and seat cushions (about $1000.00) and you would have a brand new($4000.00) chair. They can be ordered from any Herman Miller outlet, and snap right on to the frame very easily. The frame of both the chair and the ottoman are both in excellent condition.
