ABOUT THIS ORIGINAL 1970s VW POSTER
"$1780 each" (1972), glossy paper, 29"w x 13.5"h This is a fairly uncommon VW Bug poster from the early 1970's, and it's very Volkswagen in its creative approach, in that emphasizes the low price using a sense of humor - "each". Not bad for a headline using just two words!
Not sure who worked on this design, but I do know at least one VW poster designer from this era has a poster in the Smithsonian permanent collection.
BACKGROUND—ORIGINAL, NOT A REPRINT There are one or two of these posters for sale on eBay, and it's clear to me that most sellers don't quite understand what they are.
These particular VW posters were not printed for showroom use. They're called "miniatures" in the printing business, and were actually proofs of full-size advertising billboards, printed in low runs of a few hundred (at most) . They were circulated to the ad agency staff and the VW client to final check the color and design, before the actual billboards were posted on highways all across the country.
They were also used by the ad agency (Doyle Dane Bernbach), and its art directors and writers, for promotional samples. Many billboards were designed by the DDB Los Angeles office, starting in the early 1960's.
