Original Walt Disney World Cast Member Railroad Conductor Hat BadgeAuthentic Original 1971 Cast Member's Railroad Conductor Hat Badge from Walt Disney World, FloridaWalt Disney was an avid railroad enthusiast and even built a miniature steam railroad, called the Carolwood Pacific Railroad in his back yard. He included a full size 3 foot narrow gauge railroad known as the Disneyland Railroad in the design of Disneyland which would be included later at the parks in Tokyo, Paris and Hong King. For Walt Disney World instead of building steam locomotives from scratch, as they had done for the first two locomotives in Disneyland, Disney Imagineers Roger Broggie and Earl Vilmer began searching for historical steam locomotives to use on the rail line. After viewing photos that railroad historian Jerry Best had from the United Railways of Yucatan, they traveled to the Yucatan Peninsula in 1969 and purchased five steam locomotives. They were shipped by rail to the Tampa Ship Repair & Dry Dock in Tampa Florida where four of them were restored by a crew headed by the Disney Imagineers, Bob Harpur and George Britton. The locomotives were cosmetically backdated to appear older, the tenders were completely rebuilt from the frame up and 20 open air excursion coaches were constructed from scratch at the shipyards. Each coach could seat up to 75 passengers. read more
