Very Rare and historically important, original, 1815 American War of 1812 Illustrated Broadside titled "Battle of Plattsburgh and Victory on Lake Champlain : In Which 14,000 British Myrmidons were Defeated and Put to Flight by 5000 Yankees and Green-Mountain Boys on the Memorable Eleventh of Sept., 1814.". Windsor (Vermont), 1815. Printed for the Flying Bookseller (Jesse Cochran) Jan. 1, 1815 (stated date but printed sometime after February 1, 1815). The very rare and important, original 1815 broadside offered is a damaged example of one of the most elaborate Broadsides published during the War of 1812. The Broadside, when intact, measured 19 1/2" x 23 ¾" - this example measures 18 ½" x 23 ¾" with loss along the left hand edge (affecting the 1st of 7 columns of text and illustrations) and at the lower right hand corner (see the scans below for a good indication of the damage to this wonderful Broadside). This Broadside has been identified by the American Antiquarian Society as number 1709B of the Catalog of Vermont Imprints 1778-1820. it is stated that this is the 3rd printing of the central "Song" (first published in January of 1815 as a smaller, 3 column Broadside containing the "Battle of Plattsburgh.." only) and the second printing of the complete 7 column Broadside with full text and illustrations. The content of the Broadside includes text and illustrations relating to a number of different military actions during the War of 1812. Column 1 contains 9 cuts with explanatory text. Column 2 has an illustration at the top titled "The City of New Orleans" which depicts the City in flames. Below the cut is related text headlined "Interesting Sketches" / "Extracts of Letters - Official New Orleans, Jan. 13, 1815" (the formal report of the victory at the Battle of New Orleans did not reach Vermont until mid to late February, 1815 thus establishing the printing date of this Broadside). T is a cartouche at the top center of the Broadside spanning columns 3, 4 and 5. It features a draped border with headline text that reads "Grand Battle of N. Orleans, under the veteran General Andrew Jackson, the Second Washington of America, on the Memorable 8th of January, 1815. In Which Yankee Skill & Bravery will Forever Stand on Record Unparalleled in History". Below this cartouche in columns 3, 4 and 5, is the 14 stanza Song titled "The Battle of Plattsburgh..." sung to the tune of "Battle of the Kegs". Column 4 also contains 7 portrait cuts of American Generals. To the right of the Drape border cartouche at the top center of the Broadside is a cut with a circular border made up of a 16 link chain with text in the center that reads "United We Stand, Divided We Fall". In Column #5 (following the end of the "Battle of Plattsburgh..") is a poem of 9 verses titled "Commodore Macdonough's Victory" which is headed by a cut of a Federal Eagle surmounted by 17 stars. Column 6 contains a Poem of 14 verses celebrating the engagement at Lundy's Lane titled 'Battle of Niagara! Or America Again Victorious Over Her White and Red Enemies". Column 7 contains 9 illustrations.This very rare, original War of 1812 Broadside is printed on period, rag paper stock. It is damaged as stated above and as seen in the numerous scans below. T is also some separation and wear at the central, vertical fold and age toning appropriate to the age and paper stock used. T is no staining or foxing, just uniform, overall age toning. We must repeat again that this Broadside is damaged with loss as seen in the scans below but is still a wonderful display piece and worthy of professional preservation / restoration.
