Original WWII RAF Silk Escape & Evasion Map Europe C & D This is my husband's map which he has kept in storage since purchased at an auction in 2002. ~Map Details~ The first side is a map of Holland, Belgium (except West Coast), France (Northeast), and Germany (West & Central). The other side of the map is of France (Southeast), Germany (Southwest), and Switzerland (except Southeast). The silk maps were issued not only to Royal Air Force crews and pilots, but to the members of the U.S. Army Air Force as well. The silk material made it feasible to be folded into a very small square and hidden inside a boot or the lining of a cap, or some other place of concealment. They were meant to provide assistance to an airman who might have to bail out of his plane, and to give him some chance of getting to Allied or neutral territory. This map measures approximately 28"x28" and is in good condition. T is, however, slight fraying around the edges, but the fraying has not "touched" the black line surrounding the map. T are also creases in the map caused by being folded. Please contact me with any questions. This map has also been stored in a smoke-free home since owned by my husband.
