This book titled The Origins of Anesthesia by Sherwin B. Nuland, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a first edition thus and special edition published by The Classics of Medicine Library in 1983. The v oluminous work is a collection 19th century books, studies and essays on the history and development of anesthetic substances and the many initial medical applications, with plenty of historical references and primary source accounts. . Though the works are paginated individually, the book has a total of 785 pages including appendix, index and bibliography and 32 illustrations from original works, including many French cartoons about ether. This is an exquisitely bound, limited edition copy. It is elaborately gilt decorated on full leather with ribbed spine, gilt page edges, marbled end papers and sewn-in silk bookmark. It c onsists of facsimile reprints of 20 early works which mark the development of general inhalation anesthesia to the mid nineteenth century, with a commentary interspersed.
