A very nice 19th century doorbell with external knob. I believe these were made to mount directly on your door. The bell is stamped "R.&E.MFG.CO.NEW BRITAIN CT.U.SA.". The beautiful, ornate cast iron housing is also marked on the back and features the patent date of Aug. 1, 1893. The housing measures 4.5" high x 3.25" wide and has two screw holes for easy mounting. The knob backplate measures 4.25" x 1.5" and also has two mounting holes. The internal mechanism is not seized and does not appear to be damaged. You can spin the gear with your fingers and it has a nice ring. All you will need to make this work on your door a small square post to go between the bell and knob so that when you twist the knob the post will drive the gear (similar to the type of post you would find between two doorknobs). A nice piece of Victorian hardware!
