You are viewing an absolutely stunning antique Steamer Trunk. It states on the cast iron hardware that it is patented Oct, 1877. The hardware is very unique and ornamental. The wood has a wonderful patina. This trunk has been refinished to bring back it's beauty. All of the hardware and locks are original and in pretty good shape. This is a very attractive trunk that could be used for just about anything. Store old mementos and pictures, or just display it as is. The dimensions are a small size of L30 1/2", W20" and H13". Perfect for the smaller space allowance. The refinishing process began with removing all the old canvas and inner paper. I left the picture and trunk maker tag alone. It is still situated on the inner top of trunk. I then cleaned all of the wood with a mild furniture stripper to get all the old varnish and grime off. The trunk was then sanded to allow it to be smooth to the touch. No slivers will happen from this one. The trunk was then treated with 3 coats of Polyurethane by Minwax to protect it for many, many more years. The inside was only treated with 1 coat as the wood needs to breathe in order to prevent any future warping. The metal trim was painted satin black by Rustoleum. The lock, latches, slat clamps, handle caps and nails were all painted in Gold Leaf. The handles were replaced with top quality black leather. They were also doubled for extra strength. This trunk really turned out nice. I like to work around the hardware, never removing any, unless needed. This makes it genuine and as original as possible. This trunk is a true antique and shows signs of it's age. This is normal in most Steamer Trunks. T are stress cracks. T are dents and dings in the metal trim and wood. The tray is no longer present. The lock may be functional, but I don't have a key to check it. A locksmith could help you with that if you wish. One of the slat clamps on the front right is different from the rest. I believe it was made that way because I see no signs of it being replaced. Who Knows! It is hardly noticeable. All of these age dillemas are normal and add to the character and authenticity.
