Dan GLE GBEE - STILT DANCER Brings good luck and dispels evil spirits. Liberia WOOD: 10 " Tall, by 6 " Across and 3 " Deep FRONT : 12 " tall x 10" across Headdress goes 24" from front shells to base of hair . Old and authentic ritual mask by the Dan Tribe of the IvorIE Coast. This is the REAL thing and NOT a "made for tourist" mask. Actually used during tribal ceremonies. This Dan mask is a ceremonial mask which is worn during festival time,The dance has very intricate hands and feet movements, with which the drummer and the masked dancer communicate. At times, the drummer follows the dancer, and at times the dancer follows the drummer, making it a true dialogue in movement and sound. Crafted in Africa in the EARLY 1980's(est.) The actual wood part of the mask is probably older. This is a used male mask,with bells, raffia ,shell,monkey hair,metal rings and seeds. The mask shows plentiful use and is in pristine condition, similar masks sell for $ 650.00 on ebay and for $ 1,000.00 and higher in metro galleries, For the Dan, the mask is a channel of communication with the high god Zlan, but the real intermediaries are the spirits of the ancestors who are invoked through the mask. The power of the mask to influence the ancestors depends on the social prestige of the owner, since a man can only reach prominence with their help, and his very success shows that the ancestors favor him. An inherited mask retains its power over the ancestors and the more prestigious its owner was in his life, the more powerful he will be as an ancestor.
