Original Osaka Actor Portraits - Produced in the 19th century by artists in the Kansai region surrounding Osaka, these fantastic Osaka portraits are instantly distinguishable from typical Edo ukiyo-e. During the 19th century, distinctly different artistic styles emerged in Edo and Osaka. Drawn with large eyes, somewhat awkward angles and released primarily in a smaller format, Osaka prints were nearly always portraits of actors or kabuki scenes.

Much like the style of the prints, the demand for ukiyo-e in the cities of Osaka and Edo were quite different in the 19th century. Due to demand, the numbers of ukiyo-e designs made in Osaka were far less than those produced in Edo. This allowed Osaka artists to maintain the highest standards of quality in their work, while in Edo publishers eased standards to fulfill the public's desire for works by the most famous and popular artists of the time. As a consequence, Osaka prints are quite rare and also some of the highest quality prints made in the 19th century.

We are pleased to offer this wonderful group of original Osaka prints this evening. They were purchased as a single estate collection in the Kansai region of Japan from the original family that collected them. They are an excellent, exciting opportunity for a devoted collector to own some of these beautiful Osaka portraits. These prints present a great opportunity to collect from this rare and wonderful segment of Japanese art. We have not often offered Osaka prints. So, bid now!

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Backed with thin paper. Slight toning in subject. A couple slight stains. Nice overall.
