Van Heflin (1910-1971). American actor of the stage and screen, equally adept at leading and character roles, who snagged an Academy Award for his knockout performance in Johnny Eager (1941). The quintessential “actor’s actor,” he gave strong performances without resorting to showy flourishes or histrionics, and was known to shun the Hollywood limelight in his private life at every turn. His more memorable roles included The Outcasts of Poker Flat (1937), Presenting Lily Mars (1943), The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1943), Possessed (1947), Green Dolphin Street (1947), The Three Musketeers (1948), Madame Bovary (1949), East Side, West Side (1949), My Son John (1952), Shane (1953), Wings of the Hawk (1953), The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), Stagecoach (1966), and Airport (1970).
