OTTOMAN CANDIA NAVAL GREEK ISLAND CRETE 1801. This map is removed from an Ottoman era naval chart atlas. Printed in 1801, Banchi, Genoa, Genova, Italy. Designed by Joseph Roux. Prepared by an old captain named Jean Joseph Allezard. Used by an Ottoman seaman or captain.
Joseph Roux: (1725-1793) was a French cartographer and hydrographer. He is also considered the originator of modern ship portraiture. In 1764 he published 12 charts and an atlas of Mediterranean harbors.
Joseph Roux: - a hydrographer from Marseille, map publisher, manufacturer of navigating instruments. King of France granted him permission to be called "Hidrographe du Roy".
In 1764 Joseph Roux published a series of 12 charts of the Mediterranean; he simultaneously published atlas of Mediterranean harbor charts. T are several editions of this atlas, containing different number of maps. Our edition consists of 120 plates.
