Circular silver medal pierced for ribbon suspension with ornate silver suspension bar; the face with an elaborate trophy of arms, the Sultan's radiant tughra above; the reverse inscribed in Arabic characters 'Medal of Merit especially for Those Who Have Shown Loyalty and Bravery' and dated in Arabic numerals AH1308 (AD1890); some surface wear and age oxidisation marks; on old but incorrect ribbon bearing a correct silver bar supported by crossed sabres and inscribed with the date AH1333 (AD1915). The medal was instituted in 1890 and became the standard Ottoman military decoration. It could also be awarded to civilians for merit and from 1905 to women for charitable and meritorious acts. From 1915, awards made during World War I had the ribbon bar seen on this example. A good example. NO RESERVE..........................
