One ounce, 2002 American Gold Eagle, $50 coin 1 ounce of beautiful, 22-karat gold! American Eagle gold bullion coins were authorized by Congress in 1985, and first minted in 1986. The design of the obverse (front) is a rendition of sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens' full length figure of Lady Liberty, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with the Capitol building in the left background. The classic design was first employed on the $20, double-eagle “Saint-Gaudens” gold coins commissioned by Theodore Roosevelt, minted from 1907-1933. The reverse design, by sculptor Miley Busiek, features a male eagle clutching an olive branch and flying above a nest with a female eagle and her hatchlings. All Gold Eagles are comprised of 91.67% (22 karat) gold, 3% silver, and 5.33% copper. The $50 Gold Eagle coin weighs 1.0909 troy oz (33.930 g), with a diameter of 32.70 mm (1.29 in), and a thickness of 2.87 mm (.113 in). A Gold Eagle's value as a collectible varies with the relative scarcity of its particular mintage and with how little worn it is.
