Outstanding water jug in brilliant cut leaded glass from the early 19th century, presumably of Irish or English origin.Magnificent proportions and perfect barrell shape with applied solid strap handle.Sweeping accentuated pouring lip and rim with fine sawtoothed edging. The piece is cut with restrained linear designs that give it a timeless design overall.Single panel about the upper body of diamond diapering, while the majority of designs are deep linear incisions and panel slices. The horizontal linear cuttings below the pouring lip accentuate the sweep, while the vertical cuts around the body subdue the stoutness of the barrel form and bring graceful slenderness. The jug has an interesting area of long verticals near the handle. They draw the eye to the beauty of the solid strap and it`s simple arrow-shaped cut accents.Lovely and intricate star pattern cut into the jug base. The piece is of top quality and exceedingly brilliant leaded glass. All the cut designs are very crisp and refract light superbly. This type of linear cutting became fashionable about the period 1830,particularly in English glass houses, superceding prior focus on diamond patterns for a short time. This piece has a fine and delicate balance of both types that give it particuar appeal.Aside from base wear commensurate with age,the condition appears mint.Measures 7 3/4 inches high and 8 3/4 inches handle to spout. A superb example of early Anglo-Irish cut glass in a water jug of magnificent restrained design and timeless beauty.Period circa 1830.
