is one of the most beautiful pieces of antique ivory scrimshaw you will ever see, take a good look at this piece of scrimshaw, it is absolutly gorgeous!! This piece measures 4 3/4th inches long without the hanger, and is 2 24/32nds wide, the plarform is 1 inch high, the top of the pointer is 3 inches high. The outside of the body is brass, as is the hanger, the top is ivory and the bottom some kind of wood burl with a small ivory block set in the center with what I assume to be the signature of the maker. This piece is not just carved, but the ship and cherub face as carved with a slight bas-relief for added beauty and depth. The detail is fantastic, this was a master carver!! The signature piece looks to me like a horses head and 2 initials below it, but I cannot make out what they are, perhaps someone will recognize this signature mark?? Excellent condition, t are a few scratches that have come through the ages, but nothing distracting, a chance for the acqusition of a lifetime. T his comes from the same collection as did the other nice pieces of ivory I sold recently on ebay, buried away for the last 50 years in a VERY high class collection of this type of thing, and only the advanced age of the owner is bringing these to the light of day again. is a chance to own a great piece of GENUINE early meritime scrimshaw Americana.
