eBay's largest sellers use AuctionLynxx to increase sales... shouldn't you? ~ OVOID 3 GALLON CROCK JUG NORTON & SON BENNINGTON, VT c1845 ~ ~ Rare Primitive Ovoid in a No Reserve Auction ~ Featured in this auction is a very rare 3 gallon Bennington, Vt. Ovoid Single-Handled Jug made by and marked "Norton & Son Bennington 3." This was made c1845. The makers mark is deeply and clearly stamped and highlighted with blue cobalt. This piece is beautifully decorated with an unusual separated single flower in blue cobalt. A blue cobalt dot follows the bloom at the top left of the jug. T is no frying to the cobalt decoration. T is a small 1/4" manufacturing defect w the leaves join the stem. This is one spectacular piece of stoneware. It is in excellent condition with a nice salt glaze over most of its exterior surface. One 1/4" natural potstone mark on the lower right side. Two super-fine hairlines on the exterior of the spout that can barely be seen and do not go through. T is an unusual manufacturing defect on the back of this piece that I found quite interesting. It is actually a "dent" that appears to have been made when the pottery was still damp. It must have been laid down on that spot and now is a permanent testament to someones carelessness! In no way does it detract from the appeal of this piece...to the contrary, it lends the jug more character and uniqueness. What appears to be a small chip on top of the handle is actually another manufacturing defect. These abnormalities I've described are to be expected in an extra-old primitive example such as this. T are no chips, cracks or hairlines to the bottom or anyw else on this old jug other than what has been described. This jug is excellent. Dimensions: 15" high x 11" at the widest point. 6" wide base with a 2 1/4" spout. Handle is about 7" long. 2" space between handle & jug body. Weight: 11lbs 4ozs. This is an outstanding primitive ovoid jug in design, decoration and condition. This is your opportunity to own a very rare example of antique stoneware. Offered with NO RESERVE! FREE SHIPPING with BUY-IT-NOW. I missed part of the makers mark on this piece. The mark starts with an "L." Says " L. NORTON & SON." Sorry 'bout that!
