She came from humble origins and the world she grew up in, although in the grips of the Renaissance, was still a landscape plagued by incessant disputes between feudal lords. The frequent battles, known as the "hundred year war", made hapless pawns of the peasant class.On the 27th of June, 1472, Jeanne was a sixteen year old girl while her small town of Beauvais was under attack by Burgundy Knights, led by the Duke of Burgundy, Charles Martin, also known as "Charles the Bold". Charles was a usurper and the arch rival of Louis the XI, the recently crowned King. Charles led an invading force to contest Louis's right to the throne.Life. Property. Liberty.The town of Beauvais had only a small contingent of 300 fighting men manning the battlements. A siege battle ensued and very soon the town's people were overwhelmed and severely disheartened as defeat was imminent. One of Charles's champions breached the defenses and made it over the wall and onto the ramparts. The soldier wielded a flagpole which he waved as the signal that the town had now been captured. Upon seeing Charles's banner fluttering in the wind, the reality dawned on Beauvais's fighting men that surrender was now truly their only option.One among the citizens did not take kindly to the audacity of this interloper desecrating her beloved town with his retched flag. The teenaged Jeanne could take no more. She climbed the ramparts and made a wild dash towards Charles's champion. Along the way she took hold of a menacing hatchet and upon reaching the man she struck out with tremendous force, the hatchet burying deep. Again and again she hacked at the astonished man. After receiving such a butchering, reducing him to a bloodied travesty, he surrendered the ghost. Jeanne seized his banner and hurled the man over the battlements to fall at the feet of her enemies. She then broke the flagpole and flung the banner down to Charles.The Victor & the SpoilsSeeing this miraculous display of heroics by one of its own daughters, the citizenry of Beauvais rallied around Jeanne and fought with the frenzy of demented lions. Charles and his men had no other choice but to flee the battle. Jeanne was given the name "Jeanne Hachette" or "Jeanne the Hatchet". King Louis XI was duly impressed with his subject so bravely seeing off his arch nemesis that he allowed Jeanne to marry for love, which was nearly unheard of at the time and thus she wed her chosen lover Colin Pilon.
