Scarce Napoleonic/War of 1812 era Pattern 1796 British light cavalry officer's sword, dating from around 1810. The steel stirrup hilt has been cleaned bright, and has clean peppering and light pitting overall. The original leather grip is virtually complete and in good condition, with just a little wear in places, and retains most of its binding wires.The blade is of the usual form with a single broad fuller each side, and is smooth, clean and bright, with a couple of small edge nicks, and some spots and small patches of light staining. It retains most of its engraved decoration, including trophies, foliage and floral motifs, and a mounted hussar with raised sword (the latter is a typical feature of many of these swords). It also has the word 'Warranted' engraved across the blade at the forte, which is often found on British-made swords of this era. A little of the original gold wash remains adjacent to the hilt, and some of the engraving also retains a little of its gilt. The blade has been sharpened, but this must have been done a long time ago as the sharpened edge is age stained. There are some light grinding marks at the tip on the RH side, and a run of them along the flat of the edge on the LH side where the regimental armourer clearly got carried away!There is no maker's name that I can see, but the pointed langets are typical read more
