Painted Ponies

IRON HORSE

THIS IS AN ORIGINAL ART WORK

This is the second in a series of Native American ponies I am painting.

A blank paint your own pony was used and includes original box and hang tag.

This pony is original and hand painted with acrylic paints and covered with a acrylic gloss finish. It is numbered 001 and is signed on the underside of the base.

.

My inspiration for this pony comes from the Native Americans. They used the words Iron Horse to describe the Railroad as it moved west into Indian territories. It was the perfect symbol for what had become the clash of two cultures. As the railroad pushed west, it brought about great change for both cultures. Because of this, the transcontinental railroad system ended a way of life forever for Native Americans. Gone forever were the Pony Express and the wagon trains. A once perilous journey by wagon train that would take 6 months to travel coast to coast now became a 6 day adventure. Mail and freight would now be sent via the transcontinental railway. Large numbers of settlers would now claim lands the native peoples once used for hunting. Migrating buffalo would not cross these tracks, changing traditional hunting grounds. American Bison were slaughtered to near extinction by buffalo hunters and the US Army, taking a major food/clothing source from the Native Americans, as well as a spiritual icon.

On my pony you will want to start with the Atlantic Ocean and the big east coast cities that many settlers would leave from to travel west. From t you will move into the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains . Underneath that landscape is a small steam locomotive that emerges from the mountains and travels back to the east coast. The front of the pony has a steam locomotive emerging from a mountain tunnel, the smoke stack bellowing steam up and over the pony's mane. Steam also comes from the pony's flaring nostrils. Following the mountains from the other side, you move into Monument Valley with a lone Indian figure on horseback, head tossed back and seeking help from the Great Spirit. Lastly, you will find yourself at the west coast, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific Ocean . Again you will see the small steam locomotive running from the mountains and traveling back towards the west coast. The base of the pony has a single line of railroad track on a bed of rock.

I hope you will enjoy this pony as much as I enjoyed painting it. This is the second pony I have painted and have spent much time detailing it. My imagination runs wild with ideas for these ponies. I will be doing a series of Native American ponies over time as well as some others that are just whimsical and funny.

Thank You for taking the time to look at my artwork.
