This auction is for a pair of glorious Delft Vases that date to the 1600s. I am not an expert, but have been a Delft collector for over 30 years. I was given no information about this pair when I purchased them, except for the fact that they date from the 17th century. I have done some research to identify the artist or factory. My main sources are: Discovering Dutch Delftware by Stephen J. Van Hook (published 1998), Collector's Handbook of Marks and Monograms on Pottery and Porcelain by William Chaffers, 13th edition (out of print with no date of publish), and Kovels' Dictionary of Marks Pottery & Porcelain 1650-1850 (1995). I believe that the markings on the bottom are from The Greek A factory (De Grieks A), which operated in Holland from 1658-1818. I have tried to include a photo of the mark found in the Van Hook book on page 124. The other possibility is that this is an artist's mark from A. Pynacker, who in 1690 worked in the De 3 Porceleyne Flessies (The Three Porcelain Bottles) factory. If anyone can better identify these marks, please let me know. As I repeat, I am not an expert, but the markings, design and color of the exposed clay identify this pair as 17th century. These are incredibly beautiful and have an oriental motif with mustard yellow, several shades of blue. Lovely greens and reds are included as well. They stand read more
