VERY RARE AND BEAUTIFUL MATCHING PAIR OF 19 TH CENTURY CAST IRON AND GILT BRADLEY & HUBBARD B&H MANTEL EWERS, MARKED "B&H #147", EXCELLENT ORIGINAL VINTAGE CONDITION! This matching Antique Baroque Cast Iron Ewer Set was made between 1875-1880 by Bradley and Hubbard Manufacturing Company of Meriden, CT. Started in 1854 by Walter Hubbard and his brother-in-law, Nathaniel Bradley, B&H made clocks, lamps and andirons until after the Civil War, when they started making other decorative household items, like these non-functional sideboard pitchers or mantel ewers, also called garnitures or garnishers. They stand a large 16" tall on a scroll-footed 5" square cast iron base (magnet does stick) which is pierced with a basket weave pattern. The pitcher-shaped upper portion has a cone-shaped bottom which constricts to an extremely narrow throat, then flares out to form the spout. An elaborately foliated and scrolled handle is attached to the throat and spout. T is a good amount of gilt left on both ewers, and most remarkably, the unusual textured yellow-green paint on the cone portion is in excellent condition. (I should point out that the outdoor and flash photos exaggerate the yellowness of the paint. It appears a muted almost brown in dimmer indoor light.)
