At some time between 1753 and 1756, J J Kaendler, the great modeller for Meissen was commissioned by Louis, the Dauphin of France (1729 – 1765) to produce bust portraits of two of his children, Princesse Marie Zephirine de Bourbon (1750-1755) and her brother Louis Charles, Duc de Bourgogne (1751 -1761). The children were modelled wearing plumed bonnets and eighteenth century clothes with bouquets. The two beautiful Kaendler portraits of these two sadly short-lived royal children were of course made by Meissen and examples now cost several thousand pounds. But they have been reproduced at times in the intervening 260 years by other porcelain manufacturers. This exceptionally beautiful and finely made pair was made in Vienna in about 1870. The underglaze marks are not crystal clear but are perfectly legible. Each bust carries an incised number under the white glaze on the base, “N2195”. They stand 12.5cms (about 5”) tall and, before packing, weigh 386gms. They are in very good condition with only a tiny loss on the leaves of the flowers at the top of the bouquet worn by the little boy. This can be seen in the photos and is not intrusive.
