If there are any Lassen County collectors or just those who appreciate early California history, this is a wonderful opportunity to acquire some truly unique photographs! Lassen is famous (or infamous) for establishing the Lassen Cutoff of the California Trail , which left the main trail near the modern-day Rye Patch Reservoir and crossed a desolate section of what is now northwestern Nevada , including the Black Rock Desert . In the first photo the monument appears to be outside of its final setting- but large pine cones are all around its base. In the second photo the monument is up against an extremely large Ponderosa Pine. I found information that leads me to believe that this was the largest Ponderosa Pine that had ever been found, (more info below). The pair of photos are in their original gold gilt frame from the 1860’s. I am also including 3 real photo postcards; #1 shows the old monument sitting beside a newer c. 1900 ear monument to Lassen, #2 is a photo of the new monument by itself, and #3 is a pin and ink drawing of Peter Lassen. Here is some history relating to Lassen’s monument and where it was moved: In April 1859, Lassen was buried where he was murdered, in the Black Rock Desert. In November 1859, U.
