PAIR OF ANTIQUE JAPANESE NODDERS This attractive pair of antique nodders are probably of oriental origin. We would estimate them to date from the late nineteenth century. They have clay / pottery bodies and bisque heads. The bodies are painted and glazed and their heads are painted but unglazed. Both feature a Japanese lady, one is holding a stringed instrument and one is holding a book. The nodders have flat metal pins through their necks and their heads are counterbalanced by lead weights. Their heads then nod up and down on these pivots. They are well constructed and nicely painted, but there are no maker's marks. Condition: Very good condition with some wear consistent with age. There are some manufacturing flaws as might be expected and some rubbing and wear to the paintwork. There is some cracking to the glaze to the hand of the lady holding the book underneath the book. One of the neck balances has a small crack at the bottom where the metalwork is attached. There is possibly some chipping aroound the neck openings, but this may have been done at the time of manufacture. The metalwork has some tarnishing. The figurines are overall a little grubby and dusty. The approx. measurements are as follows:7cm high. (Ref. #12965) Please note that we have many other antique nodders available as we recently purchased a large collection. read more
