Album Pair 19C 8-Inch Reflector Candle Wall Sconces
{Please Scroll for More Photos Below)
Description: Early pair of traditional tin candle wall sconces with prism reflector dish mounts and fluted, shaped candle cup holders. A matched set, each is made of heavy tin (soldered together), and each has a mercury glass multi sectioned mirror behind the candle holder. The curved dish mirror is divided into 112 glass prisms in a rounded shallow bowl shape that measures 8 inches in diameter. The 2-inch center circle makes it 113 separate prisms or 226 total for the two. When measured from the top of the prism mirror to the bottom of the candle cup, each sconce stands 9 1/2 inches high. Each can be mounted on a wall by using the permanent bar built in to the back of the dish. This pair is quite old, and I am guessing early to mid 19th century. These are scarce today because of the fragility of their mercury glass prism reflectors.
Condition: The sconces are sturdy and ready to hang with extended candle cups securely attached (one old re-solder on the back of one cup, pointed out in photo #8 below). Out of a combined 226 pieces of glass, all are still in place except for three on one sconce. These are missing from the bottom row, just above the candle cup holder (pointed out in photo #4 below). T is random staining and deterioration (moderate to serious) to the mercury coating under the glass on both sconces, one sconce being worse than the other (best viewed in close up photos #3 and #4 below). This is all due to age and exposure, probably to moisture. If you are a collector and looking for perfect examples, these are not for you. If you are someone who wants an authentic pair of early lighting sconces that still look terrific in a period house, these are worth considering. I have taken enlarged pictures of the sconces lit and hanging in my old house on my wall, both in daylight and at night, without flash, so you can see how beautiful they look. (Please see last few photos for these indoor ones; the majority of the photos were taken outside). I am offering the pair of these with a very modest reserve which reflects the condition described.
