Rare Pair of BARON & HILL BARNSTAPLE Vases dated 1896.Both decorated with slipware sgraffito open mouthed fish swimming in seaweed on an orange peel ground with 3 organic swirl handles.Incised to the base of each vase-Baron & Hill Barnstaple 1896 & 200.Hight 15.5cms and about 15cms across. There is nothing known about HILL,apart from some guesswork as far as i know. But these vase are made of white clay & usually are over fired but this pair are superb and as good as Baron's later work.Very few of these vases are known.Condition is wonderful for these fragile vases & very rare to find a pair that is unrestored. One vase has a small glaze loss on the edge of its base, which looks like it started off with a little missing then got a bit worse. On the other vase you would say was perfect but there is a pinprick size nick to one handle and a tiny wee chip on the base which im sure was done in the kiln.Handles in great order
