Designed by New Zealand born, architecture-trained ceramist Keith Murray. First manufactured in England in1933, production of this popular model continued until the 1960's. The pots were hand thrown and then a lathe was used to cut the clean lines, a system devised by Keith Murray. Machine-like precision, a quintessential element of early Art Deco!
The vases are each 9-1/4"/23.5 cm high and ca. 8"/20.3 cm in diameter. They are completely glazed inside, out and bottom with a white slip. The bottom of the foot is unglazed and cut at a clean bevel. I believe this color was marketed as "Moonstone". If any Keith Murray collectors contact me with corrections I will add them. Thanks! The bottom is stamped in gray "Wedgwood Of Etruria & Barlaston; KM; Made in England." One is in excellent condition. The other has two dings each smaller than the head of a pin which I can't tell if happened in firing or later; they are too small to photograph clearly. It also has marks from rubbing against other objects: the marks are like a light pencil/graphite mark probably coming from rubbing against a metal object. I tried to "erase" the marks using a mild scouring powder but they seem to be permanent. You can only see them by examining the vase very closely. The insides are very clean--I never put flowers or anything in them--they stand on their own and don't need embellishment. I purchased the pair at the Art Deco Society show in San Francisco over ten years ago, and paid a very pretty price for them. I will add $10.00 extra to the shipping charges for buyers outside the US since it takes extra time at the post office filling out forms and getting advice on the best way to ship. I will waive $10.00 off the handling fee if you can convince me that you hate George W. Bush more than I do. Who says hatred doesn't pay? Also, non-US buyers: please be prepared to send me special mailing instructions including anything you would like me to say on the customs form.
