Offered for auction is this pair of antique, gilted bronze candlesticks that had been electrified and converted to table-lamps. The lamps come with art glass globes/shades and amber-colored tear-drop glass prisms. The lamps stand 17 1/2 inches (44 cm) tall (with shades on). Each shade is 7 1/2 inches (19 cm) tall, flares to a width of 5 inches (13 cm) at the open end and has a fitter diameter of 1 1/2 inches (4 cm). The highly iridescent shades have green pulled-feather decor with applied gold threading - the shades display a multitude of colors, in particular, the blues and purples are highlighted on their flared ends. Similar to Tiffany's, 'Favrile', or Steuben's, 'Aurene', the shades have the thousand-tiny-fractured-look meant to refract and reflect light - the rainbow of colors on them change depending on how light hits them. The globes/shades were fitted with metallic collars to accomodate them in the candlesticks' holders - the globes fit beautifully on the candleholders. The shades are unmarked but were most likely made by either Quezal or Durand - as far as I know, though pulled-feather-decor articles were made by a handful of makers during the early part of the twentieth century, only Quezal and Durand put applied threading on their pulled-featd-decor articles. From the exceptional vibrancy of colors on the shades, I would lean on them being made by Quezal - Quezal shades sold by Vineland Glassworks, ie, Durand Company, after Quezal went out of business in 1924, were generally not marked. The lamp bases themselves are also unmarked - however, I found an old faded oval-shaped silver paper label on one of the glass beads, that reads: 'Made in Czechoslovakia' (see last picture) . According to Mark Chervenka, "Czechoslovakia in an oval and Czechoslovakia in a rectangular box - have about a 90-percent probability of being Loetz" (Reference: page 31 of his book, 'Guide to Fake & Forged Marks', Krause Publications, 2002) - so the lamps were most likely made and sold by Loetz (I know Loetz also made pulled-feather-decor shades, I am not sure if they put applied threading on some of those shades). Apart from a few discontinuations (see third picture on right column)on the applied-threading in places, as might be expected, the shades are in excellent condition - no chips, cracks or repairs. T is some age-appropriate loss to the gold-gilt on the lamp bases and some of the glass prisms have to be re-assembled before they can be hung from the lamps. The electric cords are old but unchapped, and, in my opinion, do not pose any electric hazard. This is a NO RESERVE auction. Thanks for looking and should you decide to bid: GOOD LUCK. If you are the winning bidder, please wait for an invoice from me before paying. Please ask questions only if you seriously interested in bidding on the item - Thanks for your understanding.
