We believe these delightful tapestries to be of French origin from the 19th century. Both are of similar design, subject and coloring, and are of substantial size, over 9 feet by 4 feet; they were obviously ordered and designed, by the same artist, as a pair.
The coloration is good and, while there are signs of wear along parts of the sides, we could find no other serious damage; one has its top sewn over to enable a rod to be passed through for hanging against a wall, but the other is unsewn at the top. The subjects are, on one, a boy and, on the other, a girl; both are shown in rustic surroundings and with various animals, and birds and trophies in each tapestry. The boy is shown playing the bagpipes to his two listeners, one a dog shown standing upright on its hind legs and with its tongue out, possibly in appreciation of the boy's musical prowess, while the other, a sheep, is lying down facing away from the boy and clearly not appreciating the recital. The little girl is shown seated and with bare feet, playing with her doll while a basket of flowers lies on the ground and a sheep looks on from some nearby bushes. Both scenes are set in wooded landscapes, with elaborate scrolls and other decoration enhancing the effect. Altogether these tapestries constitute a highly desirable acquisition, especially since they are a perfect pair it is true that they need space to be properly displayed, but we think this offers a rare opportunity for someone with the kind of home which can display these highly collectible pieces in a suitable setting. An affordable investment in over 8 centuries of French tradition.
