We are very excited about this matching pair of 17 th century vestments, on consignment for auction from a private collection. During the Spanish Colonial period in Cuzco , Peru , these dalmatics were the outer liturgical vestments of deacons. They were worn at Mass and at solemn processions and were regarded as a festal garment. They were also worn by bishops under the chasuble. The two Apparelled Amices that accompany the Dalmatics give the impression of a high collar. Their use was abandoned by the Vatican at the end of the 15th century, but continued in use in Peru through the 17 th century. The seller has provided a book titled El Baroco Peruano , Published by the " Banco de Credito Del Peru ", that will be given to the winning bidder. That book contains a picture of a 17 th century painting in Cuzco, Peru showing how these sacred garments were used during the Corpus Christi Processions in that city 400 years ago. We have posted a picture of that painting below. Description: First, it is important to understand that a matching pair of 400 year old vestments like these in superb condition is rare , to say the least. They are entirely original, down to the inner lining. From the collar to the hem, they are 36 inches long. The sleeves are 16 inches long from the shoulders and the amices are each 21 inches long. One amice has its original tassel (although broken) and the other does not. The fabric is a very heavy-tight silk that most probably came by way one of the Jesuit ships that sailed from Asia to Peru on their way back to Europe . The Fabric is pristine, as these garments have always been kept in a controlled environment and before that, in a dry desert region of Peru . These vestments are beautiful to look at, but they are also an investment, as their collector value can only go one way, up. In 1993 the government of Peru passed a law making garments such as these National Treasures and their removal was prohibited. These pieces left Peru in the early 1980's with the seller, a respected businessman and patron of the Church, now living in Key Biscayne, Florida . Please look at our feedback score and buyer comments; WE GURANTEE THE CONDITION AND AUTHENTICITY OF THESE 4 ITEMS AS DESCRIBED ABOVE WITH A FULL REFUND OF YOUR AUCTION BID, AS LONG AS THE ITEMS ARE RETURNED TO US IN THE SAME CONDITION AS RECEIVED WITHIN 7 DAYS OF THEIR ARRIVAL.
