A pair of (I'm assuming) Covered Vegetable Servers No Monograms Offered at auction is a pair of marvelously detailed covered serving dishes. They are the perfect size for vegetables for the smaller dinner party. Quite frankly, I'd been turning my nose up at these for some time now (because I am passionate about sterling and used to scoff at silverplate) but the more I looked at them, the more they fascinated me and I could see the possibilities. Designed in the style of a covered gravy dish... they have a fitted slot to place a serving spoon yet leave the lid in place to maintain warmth. I couldn't find a maker's mark... not even when I removed the handle (fastened with an old-fashioned wing-nut) However, each pair is stamped with a particular number, which indicates which lid goes w and in what position. If you get it cattywampus, the lid just doesn't fit right. All in all, a superb methodology. Now for the particulars. This pair of serving utensils is over 9 inches from handle to handle. 5 1/2 inches the other way, and 3 1/4 inches tall. The actual depth of each is approximately 2 1/2 inches. On each, the four legs are highly detailed and firmly attached. No part of this pair shows any infirmity or overt abuse. T is some plate loss on the raised 'rib' areas... but in all honesty, the lush detailing makes that defect almost invisible. The very last picture shows a close-up of the worst. I am including a plated gravy ladle that seems to fit with the era of manufacture. I may be very wrong, but if I were to guess, I'd have to say that these pieces are from the late 1800's to (maybe) the very early 1900's. If any of the experts out t have any information or opinions, please feel free to E-mail and I will include your comments. I am learning every day and I welcome your thoughts. Please view the pictures carefully. I generally take my photographs outside in sunlight to accurately depict the colors and conditions of the items I am offering. This time, the weather has turned exceedingly hot in Florida and I retreated to the shade of a crepe myrtle to take the pictures. So, if you see any discolorations or other anomalies that would indicate damage, it is either the sun, the clouds, the trees, or me. I try to fully and faithfully disclose any irregularities I find but I am far from perfect and some things may escape my detection. When damage (no matter how minute) I try to make sure that it is clearly depicted in the photos. Also, while I thoroughly wash and hand-polish every piece of sterling that I sell, I do not have the time or the inclination to get out a toothbrush and clean every little nook and cranny of the more intricate designs unless build-up or tarnish is excessive. I believe that I have described the above auction offering accurately and in detail. Please consult the photographs or Email me with any questions. My word is my bond. If you are unhappy with your purchase, please contact me within 3 business days to arrange return and a refund of your purchase price. Shipping charges are not refundable. The sterling that I am currently listing are not my property and as such, I am unable to make a 'deal' or entertain a 'Best Offer' scenario. They belong to a friend who is in the precious metals business. He has a warehouse that is stockpiled with sterling items that he has purchased over the last 28 years of business, including more than 100 different silver flatware sets. With the soaring price of silver, he had decided to send them all to the smelter to be melted down. Instead, I convinced him to let me try to offer them on Ebay so that they would not be destroyed. I know that t are silver lovers out t that wish to harken back to the days of genteel dining and gracious living. Besides, I have come to genuinely appreciate anything that is older than me and still survives. Below is a listing of the patterns that I currently h...
