Rare pair of late Victorian Art Nouveau silver plate and enamel two-light candelabra, made in 1900. This is a rare pair of silver plated candelabra made by the most famous and important pair of English Art Nouveau silversmiths, Omar Ramsden and Alwyn Carr. Indeed, these candelabra are a very early example of their work as they start out together in 1899 and these candelabra were made by them in 1900. The candelabra were made for E.E. Austen, himself an important person as well as being a friend of Alwyn Carr - Indeed E.E. Austen served together with Alwyn Carr in the Artists Rifles. E.E. Austen was a famous and well known scientist and he studied and wrote books on the Tsetse Fly and malaria - he travelled several times to West Africa. He was head of Entomology at the British Museum in London. The candlesticks are of classic Art Nouveau design with the two branches being 'held' between whiplash stems. The centre has a flame finial above a two sided enamel shield. The shield on the one side has the red and white enamel cross with the Coat of Arms of the City of London. The shield on the reverse side has traces of red, white and blue enamel but I have not managed to work out what this was. It should be noted that this pair of candelabra was in a house fire circa 1920 and hence the damage to the enamel and indeed the overall colour. read more
