Wonderful pair of opaque glass compote dishes. I am not an expert in this field but believe these to be either chocolate or caramel glass in the opaque or opaline family. Beautiful caramel golden brown color. Not sure of exact age but estimate these to date to the turn of the 20th Century. Swirling leaves design with pronounced raised points resembling a floral motif. Very fine crisp detail in the molded pattern. Sunburst design under base. Base and bowl molded separately and joined with a seam. Opalescence to the edges. 7 5/8 inches across and 4 3/4 inches tall. In very good condition. Both compotes have some tiny age lines on their bases about a 1/4 inch in length. These are not from use and don't compromise their sturdiness. 7 of the little points on one compote are chipped and one point on the other is rough. Each has some darkening that has settled in lines that were formed during the molding process. Display beautifully and the tiny chipping to the points is not at all noticeable unless examined closely. I believe these to be unusual and hard to find if not rare as I have not seen any others on eBay. Not sure if they are American or French in origin. These and one other chocolate glass compote I have listed were purchased by me at auction in New York from the estate of Geraldine Stutz. Stutz was the president of Henri Bendel for 29 years and was the first to recognize many emerging talents in the fashion world helping put them on the map. She transformed Henri Bendel into one of the chicest shopping destinations in the world. Her home also reflected that sensibility. Thanks, 23placevendome.
