This auction is for a PAIR of vintage reproduction Williamsburg Hurricane Sconces and Smoke Bells. Interpreted from English antiques in the Colonial Williamsburg collections, "wall lights" such as these sconces maximized and diffused candlelight by reflection. The hurricane shade protected the candle's flame from drafts and the smoke bells were hung above them to protect the ceiling from scorch marks and smoke stains. The sconces are very similar to the Bruton Parish Church hurricane sconce once made by Virginia Metalcrafters for Colonial Williamsburg, item number CW16-22. The maker of this pair of sconces is unknown . The lacquered brass is in very good condition with minimal wear for age, the top sides of the smoke bells have a few dark spots. The crystal hurricanes are in very good condition and measures 11 1/2" tall x 5 7/8” at the top opening. The sconce brackets measures 5 1/2" tall and projects 8” from the wall, combined with the hurricane it is roughly 16" tall. The hanging bracket for the smoke bell is 5 ½” tall and projects 7” from the wall. The smoke bell measures 6 1/2" wide x 4" tall. The mounting screws are missing. T is a faint trademark stamped on the back of the mounting pieces, that appears to be a church or building, but I cannot identify it. The number 2012 is stamped in the back of the mounting brackets.
