A 3.5"x 1.4" (1&7/16") wide Stanfield Paleo knife from White County,Illinois. The one face shows excellent light fluting/ thinning flakes that work their way up the medial ridge. The reverse doesn't show as high a medial ridge, so no channel flakes were removed. This has to be some locally quarried chert, excellent color and bandings, but I've never heard a name given the material. The color is similar to the West Franklin cherts of Posey County,Indiana, and may be related to that chert form. Out cropping reefs from the ancient inland sea produced cherts with similar silicate range across southern Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. You constantly find tiny chert deposits the Indians utilized, and distributed in pretty narrow ranges. More prominent cherts, such as hornstone, went for hundreds of miles through trade routes. This chert knife was anciently salvaged on the tip, note the bevel to the the blade edge w a break was repaired. All the chipping is ancient, and lifetime guaranteed authentic, period. Shipping is $3.00, with delivery confirmation available for seventy-five cents extra. Personal checks or money orders are the payment forms accepted, and welcome--Roy A.
