Published more than 30 years ago, this edition is now long out of print and hard to find.From the Preface: "Unlike many other fields of study, paleobotany is somewhat unusual in that it encompasses tow distinct disciplines -- biology and geology. As a result, the literature on fossil plants is widely scattered and often difficult to locate. Some papers are published in ecological journals that have a regional scope and are often overlooked by biologists, while much of the biological literature is found in highly specialized journals not indexed in geological bibliographies. Although there have been several textbooks written on paleobotany and plant evolution in recently years, there has been no attempt to organize a collection of research papers about fossil plants that covers the entire spectrum of paleobotanical contributions. Because paleobotany is such a broadly based discipline and has a much more extensive history than most scientific areas, it is not possible to include all of the diverse aspects of the field within a single volume. as a result, this Benchmark contribution is divided into tow volumes: Paleobotany , Part I: Precambrian Through Permian and Paleobotnay , Part II: Triassic Through Plicoene . Due to limitations of space, it has been extremely difficult to select the papers for thes evolumes . The quality of the research contributions that have been published in paleobotany through the years is exceptionally high and only a few can be selected to be reprinted. IT is also understood that the papers chosen would not necessarily be those selected provide a broad spectrum of research in the discipline that covers all of the geological periods and major groups of plants. Despite the importance of Quaternary paleobotany , paper covering this time period have not been included because the area is so diverse and because many of the plants are comparable to extant taxa . In addition, Quaternary studies often include a great deal of palynological research, and in planning these volume,s we have deliberately chosen to exclude palynology . One reason for this decision is the recent (1977) collection of palynology papers assembled by Muir and Sargent and published in two volumes of the Benchmark Papers in Geology Series.
