This is an original version of the Neurocalometer from the Palmer School of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa. It is No. NW 5112618 and dated 1924 on the inspection/instruction label in the lid. It has the bakelite handled thermocouples/heat detectors (No. 1414), original wire, galvanometer meter, adjustment screw, and hinged walnut case with leather handle. Interestingly, the metal bedplate, which is screwed into the case, still has the factory seal over the front right screw hole. This is mentioned in the instruction label (see photo). The instrument measures 10 1/2 X 7 X 8 inches.
At the risk of preaching to the converted, this instrument was used by chiropractors to detect hot spots, or subluxations, along the spinal column, thus pinpointing pressure on the nerves. It was formally announced by B. J. Palmer in the summer of 1924, after a few years of development by the inventor Dossa Evins. However, Palmer would not sell the instruments, he would only lease them, for a period of ten years and upwards of $3,000, and only to people who graduated from his school, and practiced his version of Chiropractic. Suffice to say that the questionable claims of the machine and the even more questionable business tactics of Palmer has made the Neurocalometer legendary. The seal mentioned above may also have been a ploy to keep people from opening the instrument and discovering it's "secrets". There is plenty of literature available regarding these, and besides, if you are reading this entry, you probably know far more than Chiropractic than I ever will. Overall this is in excellent condition, showing very little signs of use. It will be shipped insured.
