You are bidding on a nice rare Paradox Gas Engine. It was patented 1900. The twin flywheels are about 3 3/8" diameter. I have not run it as I don't have the correct gas. This piece was designed to run on illuminating gas which was fairly common around 1900. Schoenner also made engines that ran on a similar principal and the same type of gas. I have learned that a mixture of 60% hydrogen, 30% methane, and 10% carbon monoxide is a good blend that copies the characteristics of illuminating gas. It will not run on propane, butane, or acetylene. It may have a stuck check valve as t is more compression than I think it should have. It is not a vacuum engine or flame licker. It is an atmospheric internal combustion engine with flame ignition. The gas/air mixture is drawn in for about 1/2 of the power stroke. When the piston uncovers the hole in the cylinder wall it draws in flame to ignite the mixture, giving it power for just the last half of the stroke. This engine could likely be made to run but I do not give any warranty to that affect. As I said I do not have easy access to the correct gas, tfore no way to test it. It is free, turns easily and has compression. It is missing one small bent tube you could make easily that curves upward out of the manifold and runs about half way up the intake stack. The Schoenner Steam Engine in a couple of the photos will be available in another auction. Please check my other items. are a couple videos found on youtube of a similar engine running.
