This is an original, hand-signed signature in black ink, on a 5x7 on professional Fuji-Film paper. It shows Corporal Harry Towne, US Marine Corps, during World War II - he was a recipient of the NAVY CROSS, America's 2nd-highest combat medal for heroism. Towne joined the Corps on Dec 16, 1941 and after boot camp, volunteered for the Marine Paratroopers "Paramarines." He served in Company E/2nd Parachute Battalion and saw action on the Choiseul Raid in 1943. When the parachute units were deactivated in 1944 and were used to cadre the newly-forming 5th Marine Division, Towne was a squad leader in Company I/3rd Battalion/27th Marines. During the Iwo Jima campaign, Cpl Towne led his men in attacks on heavily defended pillboxes and caves, and fought off a Japanese counterattack. Though severely wounded and under enemy fire, he signalled his men and threw hand grenades until he was exhausted; the enemy counterattack was repulsed. Photo shows him after boot camp, in forest greens with Rifle Marksman pin and Basic Qualification Badge with award bars. His signature is in blue ink and reads: "Harry Towne, Sgt, USMC, 1941-1945 Purple Heart and Navy Cross - Iwo Jima."
