The mandarin yellow Duofold Senior Flat Top pen was introduced in 1927. It was Parker's worst selling Duofold color, which explains why they are so scarce today. The Senior Streamline Mandarin pen and pencil were introduced in late 1929, equally poor sellers. Dealers still had mandarin flat top models in stock when the streamline models were introduced. Sales of mandarin duofold were so poor, Parker had an incentive of free engraving of the customer's signature on mandarin pens and pencils.
This beautiful set is a Mandarin Senior Flat Top pen desk set with a Mandarin Senior Streamline pencil. The pen and pencil must have been purchased in 1930 when dealers had both in stock. Both the pen and pencil have the owner's signature "H. S. Triplett, Freemont, Iowa" elegantly engraved in black. The pen and pencil have no cracks, chips, or notable scratches and are both in working order. The resacked pen has the correct christmas tree feed and the nib says "Parker Duofold Pen, Made in USA". The pen's Parker imprint is barely readable under magnification. The pencil imprint is deep and crisp. The black on both is deep black and shiny, and the mandarin is vivid yellow. The desk base measures 3 3/4 inches by 5 3/4 inches and is black glass with the proper pen holder for the period. It says Parker on the edge. It has a tiny chip on one corner. The story of the Mandarin Yellow Duofold is featured on p. 71-73 of "The Parker Duofold" Book.
