Paul says;

Stretton loved his Terriers and loved to depict them relaxing rather than at work or hunting as so many others artists did. He loved to place his Terriers on some kind of red background, like a huntsman’s tunic, or as in this case, a cushion. Stretton has an unmistakable quality to his work a positive "glow" as perfectly illustrated in this atmospheric work. The detail that this artist manages to pack into his work never ceases to amaze me. He is positively one of my all time favourite Victorian artists who depicted the dog.

Phillip Eustace Stretton (UK) active 1884-1919
