Here is a wonderful and beautiful red terracotta pitcher of the "red polish" Parthian pottery type discovered in Mesopotamia and dated 200 AD. This pitcher measures 11.25 cm in height with a circumference of 43 cm and is in excellent condition. The vessel has a flattened shape, a narrow spout and a wide mouth. The designs around the shoulder are geometric patterns and there are applied clay dots on the top. The item is covered with a black patina although much red can still be seen. There is a light earth encrustation and the bottom is unmarked.
Terracotta means "baked clay" and this type of pottery was used extensively throughout the ancient world. The early potters had vast amounts of clay with which to experiment and develop their styles. Items in daily use included plates, bowls, pitchers, oil lmaps, and jugs. Fortunately, many are still being found. A Certificate of Authenticity is included and shipping to a U.S. address is always free. Please add $30.00 for other destinations. Should this pitcher or any item sold by PASSAGE TO ANTIQUITY ever be shown to be other than as described we will gladly refund the full purchase price.
