PAIR OF PASTEL DRAWINGS BY ODDY, VICTORIAN LISTED ARTIST RA This listing is for two signed pastel scenes by Yorkshire artist Henry Raphael Oddy, who exhibited at the RA and other major shows around the turn of the century. The style and subject-matter of both is Impressionist, and the freshness of the drawings suggests that they were drawn in situ. One scene depicts back-lit trees in a park, with a statue on a plinth in the foreground, and the other is a French-looking street scene with a canopied cafe to the fore... puts me in mind of Sickert in Dieppe. The drawings were in their original frames when I got them, but these were mostly crumbling due to woodworm, so I had to dispose of them (not a thing I do lightly...). The pictures are laid on card, and the back of the street scene's card has worm holes, but these haven't affected the picture: I've had both pictures sealed in plastic in a freezer for 3 weeks to kill off any surviving worm. The backing board of the street picture had a label, which I've cut out and kept (and frozen for 3 weeks): I can read various bits such as ' Society of Artists, 1905, Ancient ?Remence, Hey, Pudsey' and Oddy's signature- obviously this picture was submitted for exhibition around 1905.
