For auction is a gold-plated TRIFARI pin in the shape of an abstract flower hanging down from an intertwining tendril or bough. The pin is made from gold-plated Trifanium, the tough alloy that Trifari introduced in the late 1940s. The floral pendant consists of total of eight oval-shaped, white rhinestones. They hang down from a bell-shaped sepal channel-set with white baguettes. Two white rounds embellish the bough. The pendant stones are hung in three layers for maximum movement and flash; notice that the backings have an interesting and unusual floral detailing. The plating is in excellent condition, without any signs of wear. Likewise, the stones are prismatic and flashing, exceptionally beautiful both in their colors and in their liveliness. The pinback is straight and secure. The overall condition of this piece is vintage excellent. The design was patented by Alfred Philippe for Trifari in 1950. I have included on this page the drawing from the patent application for the matching necklace for your reference; I was unable to find the patent application for the brooch itself. The brooch is signed TRIFARI PAT PEND in block letters. The brooch measures about 2 by 1.75 inches (5.1 by 4.4 cm). Trifari was one of the largest and best manufacturers of costume jewelry in the U.S. in the golden age of the 1930s-1960s. Alfred Philippe was the chief designer who brought his background in fine jewelry to Trifari in the 1930s, creating a sophisticated, high-end look for the company that was its signature for decades. Many of its design are avidly collected today. To quote Julia C. Carroll ( Collecting Costume Jewelry 202 ) about Trifari in general: " The jewelry is well made, beautiful, and because of its long history, the prices of many vintage Trifari designs are affordable.
